ORTHOPAEDICS

A pet’s quality of life can be reduced if they are unable to be fully active after limb or spinal injury, which may be a result of a one-off event, or could be due to wear and tear. Island Referral’s Orthopaedic Service investigates and treats an extensive range of orthopaedic (musculoskeletal – bone, muscle, ligament, tendon) disorders and we can assess and investigate all patients with lameness, altered gait, or change in activity.

Here at Island Referrals, patients who undergo surgery with us have a focused perioperative care plan and benefit from excellent and compassionate care provided by our dedicated and highly qualified team. We pride ourselves on recognising that no two patients, problems, or owners, are the same, and will work hard to get to the best and most pragmatic plan that we can, whatever the circumstances.

Our surgical team utilise a range of specialist surgical and non-surgical equipment to support their delivery of excellent and compassionate care. This includes, but is not limited to, advanced diagnostic imaging (CT and MRI Scanning) and intensive patient monitoring and support as needed.

The types of surgical procedures we perform at Island Referrals include:

  • Work-up of cases with an abnormal gait (lameness of one or more limbs, ataxia, weakness, combination)
  • Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture (grade 1, 2, or 3, sprain, with or without medial meniscal injury, via TPLO and/or lateral fabellotibial suture)
  • Medial patellar luxation (MPL), including femoral osteotomy if required
  • Combination CCL/MPL
  • Angular limb deformity correction including using 3D printed bone-models and customised cutting guides
  • Fractures and luxations of all bones/joints, in trauma patients (craniomaxillofacial, mandibular and dental, spinal, fore limb, hind limb, pelvis, paws, tail)
  • Arthrodesis, excision arthroplasty, or amputation
  • Work-up for total or partial joint replacement
  • Arthroscopy and/or arthrotomy of all joints
  • Humeral intracondylar fissure (HIF)
  • Osteochondrosis (debridement, and consideration of advanced treatments)

  • Chronic pain management
